Applying for a Jacksonville Marriage License

Both applicants must appear together in person at the Onslow County Register of Deeds office at 234 NW Corridor Boulevard. Neither party can apply alone or send someone else in their place. This is a state requirement that applies to all NC counties.

Bring valid government-issued photo identification for each person. A North Carolina driver's license, a state-issued ID, or a U.S. passport all satisfy the ID requirement. You will also need Social Security numbers for both parties. If either applicant was previously married, bring proof that the prior marriage ended. A final divorce decree covers a divorce. A death certificate covers the loss of a prior spouse.

The license, once issued, is valid for 60 days. The ceremony can take place anywhere in North Carolina. After the ceremony, the officiant returns the signed license to the Onslow County Register of Deeds within 10 days. That return step creates the official marriage record. Call (910) 455-3430 to confirm current fees and any other requirements before your visit.

Jacksonville Marriage Records Online at onslowrecords.us

Onslow County provides online record access through onslowrecords.us. This system covers a range of recorded documents, including marriage certificates. Researchers, genealogists, and individuals looking for their own records can search remotely without visiting the office.

Online access is useful for preliminary research. You can check whether a record exists and gather basic information before deciding whether to request a certified copy in person. Not all historical records may be available in the online system. Very old records from the 1700s and early 1800s may require an in-person or written request to the office.

Call (910) 455-3430 if you have trouble locating a record online. Staff can advise on the best way to access older or less common records. Onslow County's collection is extensive given the 1741 start date, but early records come in many different formats and may not all be digitized.

Historical Jacksonville Marriage Records Dating to 1741

Onslow County's marriage records beginning in 1741 make this one of the deepest historical collections in North Carolina. The county was established in 1734, and formal marriage records began just a few years later. Very few North Carolina counties can match this depth of historical documentation.

Researchers tracing colonial-era and early American family lines through the coastal plain region will find this collection especially valuable. Many families in eastern North Carolina have ancestral connections to Onslow County going back many generations. The Register of Deeds office and the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh are the two best resources for this depth of historical research.

The City of Jacksonville does not hold marriage records. All record requests, regardless of how old the marriage was, go to the Onslow County Register of Deeds at 234 NW Corridor Boulevard.
