Kannapolis straddles the Cabarrus and Rowan county line. Your county is determined by your home address, not by the general Kannapolis city limits. This matters when you apply for a marriage license or request a certified copy of a marriage record.

Most of Kannapolis falls within Cabarrus County. A smaller portion of the city sits within Rowan County. If you are not sure which county your address is in, check your voter registration card, property tax bill, or ask the city. The City of Kannapolis website may have tools to help you determine your county.

Once you know your county, go to the correct Register of Deeds. There is no shared office. Cabarrus County residents go to Concord. Rowan County residents go to Salisbury. Going to the wrong office will mean a wasted trip, so confirm your county first.

Applying for a Kannapolis Marriage License

Once you know your county, the application process is the same at both offices. Both people planning to marry must appear together in person. You cannot apply alone or send a representative. Bring valid government-issued photo ID for each applicant.

You will need Social Security numbers for both parties. If either applicant was previously married, bring the final divorce decree or a death certificate for the prior spouse. Both documents must be originals or certified copies. Check with your county office about what forms of ID and documentation are acceptable.

After the license is issued, it is valid for 60 days and can be used for a ceremony anywhere in North Carolina. The ceremony does not have to take place in Kannapolis, Cabarrus County, or Rowan County. After the ceremony, the officiant returns the completed license to the same county office that issued it. This return step is what creates the official marriage record.

Certified Copies of Kannapolis Marriage Records

Certified copies come from whichever county issued the original license. Cabarrus County marriages are on file in Concord. Rowan County marriages are on file in Salisbury. Contact the right office based on where the license was issued. Bring the names of both spouses and the approximate date of marriage.

Both offices offer in-person and mail-in copy requests. Certified copies carry the official seal of the issuing county's Register of Deeds and are accepted for legal purposes throughout North Carolina. Call the Cabarrus office or the Rowan office at (704) 216-8626 to confirm current fees and procedures before making your request.
