Mecklenburg County Online Marriage Records

Mecklenburg County provides online access to marriage records and license services at meckrod.permitium.com. This portal handles vital records requests, marriage license applications, and certified copy orders. Using the online system adds a $4 processing fee to your order. This is a convenient option if you cannot visit the office in Charlotte in person.

After a marriage ceremony, the officiant must return the signed license to the Register of Deeds for recording. Wait at least 10 days after the marriage before requesting a certified copy. This allows time for the record to be entered into the system. Trying to order a copy too soon will result in the record not yet being available.

For records that predate the online system, contact the office directly at (704) 336-2443 or visit the office on East Fourth Street. Staff can search older records and provide copies for a fee. All records at the Mecklenburg County Register of Deeds, except DD214 military discharge papers, are public records under North Carolina law.

Marriage Licenses in Mecklenburg County

Both applicants must appear in person to apply for a marriage license in Mecklenburg County. Each person needs a valid government-issued photo ID. Under NCGS 51-8, both parties must be present at the time of application. The license costs $60. No waiting period applies once the license is issued.

The license is valid anywhere in North Carolina for 60 days from the date of issuance. A ceremony may take place in any county; you do not need to marry in Mecklenburg just because you obtained the license here. After the ceremony, the signed license must be returned to the Mecklenburg County Register of Deeds for official recording under NCGS 51-6.

If either applicant was previously married, bring documentation showing how that marriage ended. A certified divorce decree or a death certificate for a former spouse satisfies the requirement under NCGS 51-16.

These can be ordered through the online portal at meckrod.permitium.com or in person at the office on East Fourth Street in Charlotte. The $4 online processing fee applies to orders placed through the portal.

Under NCGS 130A-93, certified copies are issued to parties to the marriage and other qualified applicants. Bring a valid photo ID and be prepared to provide the names of both parties and the date of the marriage. Allow at least 10 days after the ceremony before requesting a copy so the record has time to be entered into the system.

Mail requests are also accepted. Include a written request with names, marriage date, your contact information, a copy of your photo ID, and a check or money order. Send to the office at 720 East Fourth Street, Charlotte, NC 28202.
